Why Do Picture Framers Use Foam Board?

Matting for photographs often consists of a wide white mat, in order to border the image, hide pic corners or other mounting devices, and hold the photograph in place to prevent it from slipping around in the frame. It also provides a bit of room between the artwork and the glazing. Air is important to the art, because moisture can build up underneath the glazing, and if it reaches the surface of the pic, it can spell disaster.
