Advanced data recording technology in DLT tape drive

The ECC blocks and the data can be put on any of 4 channels in the DLT tape format. The features of SPR and the independent channel data help the DLT tape format to perform these tasks. The location of the block is independent. But if there is a bad block then the DLT tape drive rewrites the data on available next channel. So, the DLT tape drive does efficient error handling and data writing as well. If the channel is temporarily unavailable or is inoperable, even then the unit of DLT tape drive can write the data. The DLT tape format has efficient “correction algorithms” & “error detection” mechanism. Therefore, the DLT technology prevents the data loss and saves the cost due to interruptions during the operations. On smaller segments of DLT backup data tape it can store more volume of data. This is made possible because of the high density technology.

The data tapes having old technology record the data less densely, but the DLT tape format has the latest data recording technology that records the data more densely in big blocks. So, the DLT tape cartridge prevents the data loss and also recovers higher percentage of the stored data. The new and innovative techniques of correction and “error detection” are used in the DLT-7000 backup data tape drive.

The correction and error detection system includes EDC (Error Detection Code), parity, Reed Solomon ECC (multi level) and CDC Cyclical Redundancy Code (multi layers). By using these latest technologies, the DLT-7000 tape drive on single track in channel is able to recover up to 6 consecutive inches of the damaged tape. And in 4 tracks of channel it can recover data up to 1 & 1 ½ inches of the damaged tape.

For maximum tape throughput, it is necessary that the tape drive should have the capability to track the host system’s data transfer rate. The tape repositions frequently incase the tape drive’s transfer rate exceeds the transfer rate of the host. The DLT tape drive has the feature of “adaptive cache buffering” to overcome such problems. By cache buffering, the DLT tape drive monitors the host and dynamically adjusts the operations of cache buffering to lower down the delay that causes repositioning.

Applications requiring frequent searching of files for restoration or retrieval essentially need quick locating files on the tape. The DLT technology reduces the time for searching with the help of “file mark index”. This index is put at logical start of the tape. The DLT tape drive uses the index to compute the selected files location. Afterwards the searching is done at very high speed. The benefit of the high capacity tape cartridge is that they give access to more on the internet data, reduce the cost of data storage and media, low investment in the operator hours and the tape drives. The tape length of DLT tape is long and the format is ½ inch wide that’s why the DLT tape has high storage capacity. The cost is also reduced because the DLT tape has huge area for data recording which is in square inches of the tape.

Most of the other commercial backup tape formats use the techniques of data compression for increasing the tape’s performance and data recoding capacity. The increase is mostly double of the native recording capacity of the tape cartridge. Data compression technique used in the DLT tape format is “Lempel-Ziv”. Its ratio of compression is more than other data compression methodologies that have the technique of IDRC (Improved Data Recording Capability).

The Functions and benefits of the DLT tape drive

In the DLT tape drive the connection is made by the processor along with the SCSI-interface and the communication is done with the outside world through the “Data interface”. The incoming data is converted to SCSI-bit stream by the Pentium processor, and then the DLT tape drive records it in the “native format”.
The DLT tape drive has the technology and is designed to support the different interfaces of single & multi channel. Both the digital and analogue interfaces are supported by the DLT tape drive. So even in the initial stage of data collection, the DLT tape drive provides the compatibility. Therefore, the DLT drive solves the issue of compatibility. The data recorded in the SCSI-format makes the integration simple and therefore, it can be used like the other devices that are SCSI compatible. The connection is made directly by the analysis computer with the external SCSI-port of the unit itself. The data either digital or analogue can be the output through the “data interface”.

In the DLT drive from all the sub-assemblies that are unwanted, the peripheral strips off. In the front top of the tape recorder’s case is a closed compartment where the bare bones are mounted. The weight & size has been reduced because the drop down door has been doubled as “Display Panel” & “Integral Control”. At the back of the DLT recorder case is a separate compartment that’s used for mounting the “electronic modules”. The modules that are active & installed determine the function of the DLT tape recorder.

Cool air is drawn from the back of the unit by the fan that is mounted to “central-bulkhead” of the drive. This cool air flows over the electronic modules and then it moves over the “Peltier device”. This device is attached at the base of DLT drive’s compartment. Below the control panel is “mounted grill” from where the cool air is tired out. Power supply (line-tolerant) of high grade is used in the DLT tape drive. The data interface has a massive buffer for both input & output. During the recording both the discontinuous & continuous data rates from the real world are decoupled by the big buffer. This big buffer also grants the “analysis device” to move the data during the replay.

This overall interaction is very complex and the Pentium controls this overall interaction. The DLT tape drive has powerful features of “correction strategy” and “input to output error detection”. In order to take maximum advantage from the rewrite and read after write features of the tape drive, the drive selects the transfer speed of either 12 MB/second or 40 MB/second. It is made sure that the recorded data is free from errors.

The RAM (non volatile) holds the “control programs” and the standard “RS 232 port” can be used to alter and update the control programs. MS terminal can be used to fit the modem with in the tape drive for finding the faults or the “remote control”.

For the protection of the weakest links of the system, the tape drive is thermally & physically isolated and then it is fitted to the “control system” of the temperature.
The DLT tape drive also has the advanced feature of “Heat-dissipation system”.
The other components like the cables, connectors are selected that are robust and are able to deliver the best results in the extreme conditions. The DLT recorders are also used with the applications of “analogue & digital acquisition”. The digitization of the analogue data is done on eight or the sixteen bit sampling. In parallel, both the digital & analogue modules can be used.
