An Awesome Entry Level DSLR – Canon Rebel T1i Review

asked:

Are you ready to move up where the “big boys” play. You know, the digital SLR camera crowd.

Now is a perfect time to either buy a Canon Rebel T1i as your first DSLR or to upgrade from one of the older Rebel models. In fact, wouldn’t a new camera be a nice present for yourself considering the holidays are upon us?

This Canon Rebel T1i review will focus on some of the absolutely best features of this amazing camera.

Here is a list of specifications that will be of interest to most camera buyers:

15.1 megapixel CMOS image sensor – capable of printing HUGE pictures 3″ LCD panel with 920,000 pixel resolution. Works very well even in high light conditions. ISO of 100-1600 with a boost to 12800 is needed for really low light (the image quality really suffers at that high of an ISO) Lenses are interchangeable – uses all EF and EF-S lenses Digic 4 processor (this is how the camera processes the pictures. It is a much better processor than most point and shoot cameras, giving you a mega-advantage in the image quality) Kit lens is 18-55mm with IS High Speed Shooting at 3.4fps for as many as 170 JPEG images Plenty of shooting modes, including Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, and Manual which are the mainstays of digital SLR photography. Creative Auto Mode – a brand new feature for the T1i, which point and shoot owners will recognize as a feature in your better compact cameras. The camera makes creative decisions for the photographer. Video capture at 1920 x 1080 (1080p) at 20fps or 1280 x 720 (720p) at 30fps. Because of only 20fps, you might want to use the 720p option when shooting video to get better quality. That size will show up very nicely on your HDTV screen.

Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS or SD780 IS – How Do These Family Friendly Pocket Cameras Compare

asked:

Canon released two similar cameras in the “family pocket camera” market. They are the Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS and its close relative, the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS.

A very quick glance at the specifications of these two compact pocket cameras shows that they are almost identical. Here are some of the similarities:

Size: 3.4″ wide by 2.2″ high by 0.7″ deep LCD: 2.5″ with 230,000 pixel resolution Zoom: 3x with very similar focal equivalents Image Quality: both are excellent for compact pocket cameras Aperture: not exactly equal but not enough difference to make a case one way or the other ISO range: auto, or 80-1600 White Balance selection: 6 positions and manual preset Image Processor: Canon Digic 4

The differences are only in the Megapixels and the video capablility. The Canon PowerShot SD780 IS has a whopping 12 megapixel image sensor, while the Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS has only a 10 megapixel image sensor. If you are a megapixel watcher, this may be enough for you to go for the SD780 IS, but it really is not enough of a difference to base your final decision on.

Buy a White Pentax K-x – **** Digital SLR

asked:

Who could have dreamed that the White Pentax K-x would be so widely celebrated? The perfect adjective for this rather small digital SLR is definitely “sexy”.

But should you buy a digital camera just because it is ****? Heck no. You buy it because it takes impressive pictures… and it’s ****.

Browsing the reviews, you will find all kinds of glowing remarks about this small, yet stylish camera. Surprise is one of the principal observations. Surprise that such a petite digital camera can have so many pro features.

I am listing just a few of the comments that were given. These show the element of surprise from the commenters.

It can be used by the whole family, even the ones that are not adept at setting camera controls. Just set the camera on auto and it acts like a point and shoot camera. But it has one huge advantage over a digital compact – there is no shutter lag! This camera take great video! HD quality video at 1280 by 720, which equals cameras that cost three times as much. This is a great camera for a beginner, especially if you read the manual, which is extremely helpful. The camera actually “helps” you navigate through the menu. This is the best entry level DSLR on the market, by far! The advanced features, such as in camera processing spare you from purchasing expensive post processing software.

But small and cute (sexy) are not the only attractions to consider. Here are just a couple of major benefits you get in the Pentax K-x.

When considering any digital SLR, you should look for excellent image quality. This camera has it, even at higher ISO settings. ISO goes up to 12800 which will allow you to take photos in very low light situations, like concert halls where no flash photography is permitted.

Another really fun feature is the ability to take 4.7 frames per second. It’s great for sporting events where there is lots of action. There is no digital compact that can compare to 4.7 frames per second!

The LCD screen is quite large at 2.7″. It has “Live View” so that you do not have to use the viewfinder to compose your photo. Many pros balk at using LCD Live View. They are quite comfortable using the viewfinder. Point and shoot camera owners are very familiar with using an LCD screen. In fact they depend on it. You have the best of both worlds in this DSLR.

Although this is not really a feature, it is worth considering: the Pentax K-x stacks up pretty well next to some more expensive models like the Nikon D5000 and Canon T1i.

Now the question is, where do you actually get one of these amazing photographic marvels? It will take a bit of luck to find one in a local department store or camera store. Brick and mortar stores are usually very conservative in their inventory. So you probably will not find one unless you really get lucky.

Getting one online is, without a doubt, your best option.

A Canon EF-S Macro 60mm Lens Review – The One and Only EF-S Macro

asked:

Not every photographer is a professional. Of this I am guilty.

But I really like my Canon EOS 30D. And, although my camera is not a pro dslr camera, I have obtained some genuinely excellent pictures with it. I have also earned some awards on various websites as “photograph of the day”.

Looking for lenses for my own Canon dslr led me to consider the Canon EF-S macro lens selection. I find that EF-S lenses perform really well, basically due to the fact they are designed specifically for my variety of digital camera. In the event you own a Canon Rebel, virtually any model, or any of the XXD Canon cameras, you are able to use these particular lenses on your dslr camera.

The technological innovation has been particularly geared toward digital cameras with a APS-C sensor (this is the sensor that is in the entry-level to mid-level digital slr cameras referred to above).

To my surprise, there is simply one Canon EF-S macro lens available. It is the 60mm f/2.8 USM lens, and it is a dedicated macro lens. You can take pictures of really small objects, bugs, flowers, and all manner of little things. Close-up photography is the main contributing factor for why I actually moved from a digital compact to my very first Canon Rebel.

Resolving “Memory Card Error” in Nikon D90 DSLR Camera

asked:

Nikon D90 DSLR Camera is the world’s first digital camera that has a unique ability of recording video. With 12.3 mega pixel resolution, the camera possess CMOS as its image sensor. Nikon D90 digital camera uses Secure Digital (SD) Memory card or Multimedia Card (MMC) to store pictures. At times, you may observe corruption of the memory card which occurs due to virus infection, file system crash, or accidental switch off of the camera while a particular operation is in progress. This results in inaccessibility of pictures stored in SD/MMC memory card. In such situations, using an updated backup will prove handy. But, if the backup is not available, you will need to use a high quality Photo Recovery Software to recover your lost data from the corrupted memory card.

For instance – you try to view the pictures stored in SD/MMC card of your Nikon D90 camera and you encounter one of the following error message:

Canon T1i Or XSi – Kit Lens Or Upgrade – That is the Question

asked:

You are researching like you never have before, waffling back and forth between the two cameras because you can’t decide if you need the video of the T1i or you just want to take great still photos, which the XSi will give you for over $100 less.

You decide on the T1i… Whew! Then you notice all the discussion about the kit lens in those camera forums.

“Wait, are you telling me I need to consider buying another lens in addition to the kit lens?” you ask. “Isn’t there another way?”

Consider this. Get one lens instead of 2 or 3, but make it a good one. That way, you can keep the same lens on the camera for your wide angle landscapes or family photos, and just zoom in with your telephoto to take that action shot at the soccer game.

A new Announced Japanese made DSLR

asked:

Pentax K-5: Solid Specs but will it be enough?

The Pentax K-5, the interchangeable lens digital SLR camera, was announced on Monday Sept 21, 2010. Unlike the previous Pentax release, when I got to see red with the Pentax K-r, the Pentax K-5 is a much more serious and solid offering. With more advanced features and a list of very reasonable specs, it is obvious that Pentax is still very keen trying to fight for its market share.

The Pentax K-5 was designed based on the Pentax K-7, which has a more professional body and specs, and we won’t expect  to see the Pentax K-5 will be released with colourful body like the K-r, or even white colour like the K-x. Let’s take a look of the preview picture below and its specs.

Pentax K-5 Highlights:

16.3 megapixels CMOS APS-C sensor ISO sensitivity 80-12800 (Expandable up to 51200) 1080p HD video at 25fps Continuous burst speed up to 7fps Electronic level function Sensor-Shift Shake Reduction with rotational compensation (4 stops max) Weather resistant Magnesium alloy body 3.0-inch (921k dots) TFT LCD

The Pentax DSLR is known as its exceptional reliability, user-friendly operation, and compact, lightweight body of its predecessor.

Looking at the above, there really isn’t much to criticise and might even give the Canon 7D and Nikon D7000 some realistic competition if it’s priced right. Do you have any reasons why this Pentax won’t shine? Will you buy the K-5 when it will be available around mid-late October 2010 among all the new DSLR releases?

Share your thoughts with us.

New Nikon D3000 – Nikon D3000 Takes on Canon Rebel XSi

asked:

A few years back, Canon was the first to release a sub-$1000 camera with the Rebel 300D. Nikon followed quickly with the Nikon D40, and subsequent releases of Canon and Nikon entry level DSLRs have been able to increase the technology and lower the prices of these highly regarded cameras with each new release. Both Canon and Nikon have had terrific track records in the area of user satisfaction.

So how has Nikon sweetened its pot with the new D3000? There have been some very significant improvements over the extremely popular D40 which has now been discontinued from production. There are also a few improvements over the D60, which is also getting older as camera years go. Here are a few of the improvements over the Nikon D60:

LCD panel is improved from 2.7″ to 3″ Autofocus has been upped from 3 point recognition to 11 point recognition 3D AF processing Starting price is $599 (includes kit lens)

With respect to the Canon Rebel XSi the beginning price point is even lower for the Nikon than it is for the Canon, even though the Canon XSi price tag has been reduced since the release of the Rebel T1i with its newer processor and video capability. Some things to consider as you ponder your camera buying decision.

Neither the Nikon D3000 nor the Canon Rebel XSi have video, so if you must have video in your DSLR, you are going to need to spend a bit more to get to the next level, either the Nikon D5000 or the Canon Rebel T1i. Both cameras produce excellent images. This has been true with all the entry level cameras from Nikon and Canon – award winning image quality. Both models allow the use of the interchangeable line of lenses designed for these and much more expensive DSLR cameras. Other lens manufacturers also produce quality lenses for Canon and Nikon that may be less expensive.

Whether you are leaning toward the Nikon D3000 or the Canon Rebel XSi, you will be happy with your choice. The Nikon vs Canon debate will go on no matter which one you choose, but once you make your purchase, you can join in the discussions and fun on forums and camera clubs.

There is a much more comprehensive comparison at http://www.digital-photographic-resources.com.

Sigma 85mm f1.4 – New Mid-range Telephoto Competition For Canon and Nikon

asked:

The Sigma 85mm f1.4 EX DG HSM Lens was announced months ago. It was due to release in the summer, but it actually became available in November.

Yours truly had great hopes for this lens, but I got tired of waiting and checking to see if it was available. Then, totally by accident, I came across it on Amazon, and to my shock, it is now shipping.

The Sigma 85 turns out to be a wonderful alternative to Canon’s own 85mm f1.2 and Nikon’s 85mm f1.4. On the Canon side, the price is almost $1000 less and for the Nikon model, you can save a respectable $200.

Right up front, I will admit that if you are a Canon shooter, and money is not an issue, go ahead and get the f1.2 version.

Nikon D3S Digital SLR Review

asked:

The Nikon D35 Digital SLR is another addition to Nikon family. Having the freedom to shoot in the lowest lighting levels without having to resort to a flash or a tripod is something that is difficult to appreciate until you have done it. It is simply awesome. The D3S is a well-endowed camera with features aplenty including a very high ISO capability. Its top true ISO is 12,800 with the option of a staggering ISO equivalent of 102,400 using the Hi3 setting. Interesting, the camera’s resolution is a relatively modest 12.1-megapixels so it is clear that ISO speed performance remains a very high priority for Nikon.

The D3S has environmental seals so it should carry performing regardless of the conditions.  Certainly, in the cold and rain that I did my test, the camera performed flawlessly. The buttons are firm and responsive and Live-View has been given a dedicated button just below the screen, so it’s easy to use the video function.

Flesh tones were reproduced accurately and I saw no problems with delicate hues too. It all looked very smooth and lifelike, so you cannot ask for any more. In areas of fairly even tone, there was good contrast and separation and plenty of detail. Good tonal separation was also achieved with areas of saturated colors. For instance, the D3S did a great job of the red flower heads and there is loads of detail to enjoy.

Naturally, it is a different story in artificial lighting. AWB can’t cope with the lower color temperature of tungsten and you wouldn’t expect perfect color reproduction anyway. The preset tungsten setting works well and gives accurate results.

How do you decide whether the D3s (or any piece of camera kit, for that matter) is worth the best part of £4000? It’s not an easy question to answer and depends on how you view camera value. For me, however, I think the D3s is worth every penny. It is a thoroughly inspirational piece of kit to use and that in itself justifies its price tag immediately. Its high ISO sensitivity means you can carry on shooting in the poorest ambient light and without using a tripod. That would count for nothing if the results from using the high ISOs were poor and unusable, but they are not. Yes, there is noise and detail loss at the equivalent of ISO 102,400, but you still get an image – and try getting that sort of speed from film

This is great news for photographers everyplace, because photography equipment will be rising to new levels.

Nikon D3000 Takes the Place of the D40 and D60 – How Does the Nikon D3000 Compare to the D5000?

asked:

But there is already an entry level camera in the Nikon stable. It is the Nikon D5000. So what are the differences between these two cameras, and which one is the better buy?

Starting with the basic specifications that always get the headlines, the D3000 has a 10.2 megapixel image sensor compared to the 12.3 image sensor of the D5000. While many people are driven to buy the newest camera with the most megapixels, it is not as significant a difference as the marketers would have you believe. A 10 megapixel image is capable of producing monstrous prints of just about any size you would want.

Other differences of note are listed here:

(D3000 listed first) vs     (D5000 listed second)

Sensor size: 10.2MP  vs 12.3MP – slight Advantage D5000 LCD: 3.0″ with 230K pixels vs 2.7″ with 230K pixels – tilt LCD screen - slight Advantage D5000 because of the tilt screen Live View:  no  vs yes – Advantage D5000 Continuous frames: 3fps  vs 4fps – slight Advantage D5000 Video:  no   vs  Yes 1280 x 720 (720p) 24 fps with mono sound – Major Advantage D5000 Price: $599  vs  $729  (both cameras have the same Kit Lens included) – your call based on the above features Image quality: equal – Advantage D3000

The Nikon D80 DSLR Camera Review

asked:

The Nikon D80 digital SLR camera is perhaps not exactly what Nikon fans were expecting. It’s meant to replace the D70, yet it’s strikingly similar. This brings to mind an interesting issue. All companies, electronics or otherwise, are under constant pressure from their shareholders to release new products. Even you produce the enormously popular “super widget” your stock holders will darn well expect you to produce “super duper widget” in the next fiscal year. In this sense, the D80 might be Nikon telling us that the D70 was a great camera that needed few improvements.

The D80 offers a new “kit” lens, the 18-135mm f/4-5.6G AF-S ED DX, and a new vertical grip, the MB-D80. The kit lens is, by definition, fairly low-end, made to keep the price of the camera affordable to the photography newbie. The zoom has a considerably slower shutter speed than the D70 – 1/4000 compared to the previous 1/8000.

I was happy to discover that there were also some welcome improvements. The D80′s viewfinder is larger and brighter than the D70′s, and the sensor has around 30% more resolution.

The sensor in the D80 is an ICX493AQA CCD made by Sony. The same sensor is used in the Sony Alpha 100 and Pentax K10D. 10.2 megapixels translates as 3872 x 2592 pixel images, enough to produce straight-from-camera prints up to about 1116″ without resizing. The base ISO of the CCD is 100, with third-stop increments up through ISO 1600. You can also boost ISO one more stop, up to an effective ISO 3200.

Noise in the D80 sensor stems mainly from three design elements: the APS frame size, the smaller overall size of the photosites as compared to the 6mp sensors, and the lack of in-sensor NR electronics. That said, Nikon has integrated a number of things into the D80 to address the potential for increased noise over the previous consumer cameras. For example, once again data is kept in 12-bit space right up until the final compression to an 8-bit JPEG. Second, the internal digitization engine has a noise reduction component in it. All in all, low light images are easily comparable quality to the D70. This is perhaps primarily due to the larger CCD sensor.

The camera body is technically slightly smaller in all dimensions compared to those of the D70s, but current owners will find the design very similar. Most of the buttons are the same and in the same places, and there are dedicated buttons for many commonly used functions. For example, a cluster of buttons next to the shutter let you change metering mode, exposure compensation, drive mode, and AF mode. Meanwhile, the buttons to the left of the 2.5-inch, 230,000-pixel LCD screen let you change white balance, ISO, and image size and quality settings without diving into menus. About the only function without its own dedicated control is AF zone selection, though the camera’s programmable function button can be programmed to cover that if you so choose. The default for this button is to display the current ISO setting.

Three dials adorn the camera body. The mode dial lets you choose between program, aperture- or shutter-priority, full manual, full auto, or any of six preset exposure scene modes. The other two dials, located on the front and back of the grip, let you change aperture and shutter speed. Together, they make full manual shooting quick and easy, with a menu system that is easy to use.

For the most part, Nikon has negotiated the quality trade-off well in order to offer a DSLR camera for under $1000. It’s still slightly pricier than comparable Canon or Petax models, but with Nikon’s imaging reputation, it can easily charge a touch more without anyone blinking a eye.

Budget Digital SLR’s – the First Step into the World of Serious Photography

asked:

In recent years, it has become much easier for people to get into serious photography. This is due to the increasing number of cheaper digital SLR cameras on the market, which allow budding photographers many of the benefits of a professional camera but without such a high price tag.

The great thing about these cheaper digital SLR’s is that they have many of the functions and benefits of higher end photographic equipment. For example, they have detachable lenses, so you can attach many different types of lenses to your camera, as opposed to being restricted to just one built-in lens like you would with a “point-and-shoot” compact camera.

In addition to this, digital SLR’s allow much more control over settings, such as shutter speed, aperture size, and ISO. This allows the budding photographer not only greater control over the resulting images, but also the opportunity to learn about all these settings and controls in preparation for a possible future career using the high end digital SLR cameras.

Digital SLR’s also allow the photographer to save the images as RAW format, which enables greater control over colors and exposure after the photos have been taken. And let’s not forget the importance these days of learning how to use properly process digital photos on the computer.

So, with a number of reasonably-priced products now out there on the market, a budding photographer has much more chance of being able to learn the skills of professional photography without having to spend such a large amount of money.

Nikon Coolpix P7000 vs Canon PowerShot G12

asked:

There was an add during the basketball game tonight. It was one of the Ashton Kutcher Nikon adds. This one was for the Nikon S8100. Based on the add, I was about to go online and order one.

Reason kicked in before my credit card made it out of my wallet, and I did some checking for the ratings of point and shoot cameras. In the commercial, there was a short line that said more serious photographers should look at the Nikon P7000, so after finding out that the S8100 was not at the top of the “users’ favs”, I headed over to the P7000 Amazon page.

This looks like a serious competitor. In fact it looks a lot like the Canon G12 in almost every aspect. Since I love the Canon/Nikon debate, I thought it might be a good idea to compare the two. How I got from the Nikon S8100 to a comparison between these two “almost pro” digital compacts is still kind of fuzzy, but there I was.
